Imperfect navel oranges are the everyday citrus buy done smarter. They might be a little uneven in shape, carry a surface mark, or sit outside the size grade, but peel one open and you get the same sweet, clean navel orange flavour. The difference is on the outside, not the inside.
Navel oranges are at their best from autumn through winter when Australian supply peaks and the sugars are at their highest. That is when imperfect navels represent the best value in the store.
Look for imperfect oranges that feel heavy for their size with firm skin. A heavy orange has more juice. Avoid any that feel light or have started to wrinkle.
Eat them fresh, juice them in the morning, segment over yoghurt, or zest into baked goods. Same great flavour at a better price.
