Pick of the Week - Northern Territory KP Mangoes
My pick for the week is definitely Northern Territory Kensington Pride mangoes. To me Kensington Pride’s (KP’s) are the mango to eat and the territory is where they grow the best. The season is running late this year and so the price has not eased back yet. At this stage the fruit is still all or at least mostly from Darwin , that beautiful Katherine fruit from a little further south is yet to come. The Darwin fruit is ripe and gorgeous eating and the growers are working furiously to strip this fruit off before the seasonal rains start which could be any day now which destroys any remaining fruit. So it will be feast of mangoes over the next fortnight or three weeks, enjoy them at their best.
HOW TO PICK
Use your nose - look for a fragrant tropical fruity aroma. Ripe mangoes should have a full colour and will give slightly to the touch. Avoid very soft or bruised fruit.
HOW TO STORE
Unripe mangoes should be stored out of direct sun at room temperature for a few days until ripe. Once ripe, a mango should last in your fruit bowl for a few days. Never refrigerate unripe mangoes and don't store them in plastic bags as they need to breathe.
Dave's Market Update
In Veg
Not quite as many options in the vegetable category as last week, however salad items are looking terrific and it’s certainly the weather for a salad! It’s really a great week for both Lebanese cucumbers, even cheaper than last week and those punnets of baby cukes which as well as a wonderful salad additive are ideal to take to work or school to snack on.
Something a little different this week we have are punnets of sweet baby capsicums around half the price we normally sell them. They're wonderful to eat raw or cooked, a real taste treat. Again, we have premium potatoes at a bargain price, this week it’s brushed in our NSW shops and Washed kestrels in QLD. These potatoes every week help the budget stretch a little.
Finally, it looks like this will be the big week for broad beans, great in salads or cooked, we like to fry them up with a touch of garlic and chopped up asparagus in our house.

"As regular as clockwork the territory mangoes have come good again. We nearly always miss the October holiday weekend, but the floodgates open, the quality improves, the fruit starts to eat better, and all is well in the world of KP mangoes. Supply is still a little irregular, so we can’t do trays or across the board specials yet, however they are soon coming. Blueberries continue to be our top selling line and are eating fantastically.
The mandarin season is virtually over, we have the last burst of Afourers in our stores this week, they get scarce and dear over the next fortnight. Grape-sales are increasing every week, for me it’s still the whites I will be taking home. The kiwi gold whose supply has had transport problems in the last week or so, are still superb eating. Seedless melon continues to fall in price, they are eating really well, and we will see specials starting now, perfect for the warmer days we are seeing."
