Pick of the Week -  Brussels Sprouts

"My pick this week is Brussels sprouts. It is a very old-fashioned vegetable that has done a marvellous job of reinventing itself. In my childhood, bitter-tasting Brussels were something most kids despised. Now with smaller, sweeter varieties, this vegetable has become immensely popular.

Prepared in combination with salmon, bacon, and a myriad of other options - there would hardly be a trendy restaurant in Sydney that does not have them at some stage on their winter menu!

Remarkably high in vitamin C, they are a Brassica and part of the cabbage family, and absolutely one of our most popular winter vegies. Not a lot of options for an inexpensive veg , but Brussels are half last week’s price in all HFM stores. It will keep in the fridge for 4 or 5days."

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“We have a couple of interesting options this week. Brussels sprouts have halved in price since last week. They are top quality and the ideal veg for the weather we are having and a refreshing change to boot.

In NSW stores, only we have secured an excellent line of yellow capsicums. Yellows are always very sweet eating and usually our dearest capsicums, however in NSW this week, they will be our cheapest.

We have a fantastic line of absolutely premium Peruvian garlic in all our stores this week. We will from today sell this garlic at one third the price garlic was last week. Great value! Sweet corn continues to be a delight to eat and there is still a myriad of delicious snacking tomatoes in all our stores at rock bottom prices.”

In Fruit

“This time of the year, early March, is always difficult for avocados. The new season north Queensland Shepards are underway, though as is the case often a fair proportion of the fruit is immature and tastes like a glass of water, not a beautiful piece of fruit. The old season Hass avos from WA on the other hand are magnificent to eat but tricky to manage. We are sticking with the Hass at this stage, however, please don’t expect to hang on to them for more than two or three days.

As always, March is the peak month for rockmelons from down south. Great flavour and fantastic prices. The sweet little natural sultana grapes that we promoted last week are still available, albeit at a slightly higher price this week.

Figs are absolutely at their peak. They go with cereal in the morning, salads at lunch, to cook in some evening meals or just to snack on. Finally, always in March for stone fruit, we turn our attention to plums. Anything on the larger side is still expensive, however if you cast your mind to our imperfect range, you will find great eating smaller fruit at a very attractive price.

Aussie pomegranates are just around the corner so look forward to the new season fruit in the next fortnight or so coming from NSW.”
