Pick of the Week - Christmas Stonefruit

“Cherries are always the most popular Christmas stonefruit and this looks to be an excellent mainland season -  always with the proviso that unexpected hail (the worst of all) rain or heavy wind can do massive damage (everyone touch wood please).

We are getting great fruit from Orange and Young in NSW and the Wangaratta district in Victoria. Also, fruit is large premium black variety fruit. Basically, the bigger the fruit the dearer the price. Probably the biggest fruit we will have will be 30mm kilo cases, the untrained eye may have difficulty spotting the difference between these and the 1 size smaller (28 mm) fruit. Ask the store manager for help if needed.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

One tip on veg, Kumera and sweet potato and most potatoes are quite dear this Christmas. I think the best value is to be found in Jap pumpkin, it’s cheap and very good.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and keeps safe in what has turned out to be the most distressing start to the holiday period I can ever remember.”

In Fruit

The other fruit that is extremely popular at Christmas is Lychees. Again, we only stock large, bigger fruit, small seed varieties. Cheaper fruit will almost always be the more common larger seed (less edible fruit) varieties that sell around $20.00 kg, they are not good value. For super premium, at a super-premium price, we have the Dragon Egg variety. They are just so good, and we have both loose and kg cases (guaranteed to stretch the credit card in these). There are a few early plums starting up also and some of these are well priced on the imperfect stack.

Mangoes, of course, we consider to be a Christmas staple. We have great value excellent eating trays of KPs from the Burdekin region, not the best keeping mango, but great value.  I would wait a few days for this line if you are looking to consume them on Christmas day. For a fantastic premium mango, our KPs from the Mareeba region simply cannot be beaten! Honey Golds are the other great eating mango and as well as beautiful premium Honey Golds, we have some slightly marked or misshapen fruit in these for our great value imperfect stacks. R2E2s, not everybody’s cup of tea are inexpensive and probably eating as well or better than I can remember for many years.

Apricots are probably at their best right now. These are the rival variety, a lovely red blush on their skin, very sweet (when softish hence ripe and very juicy) This fruit comes from Goulbourne Valley in Victoria. We have imperfect and case sale of the same variety, smaller and with less blush but still very good eating.

White grapes (Sweet Globes variety) are good. However, the Autumn Crisps that our customers go nuts for don’t come until the new year. Our black grapes are excellent, Black Sapphires and Midnight Beauties are in bags but one of my favourite varieties which we will only have loose are the Black Adora. They will be in our stores from Friday. I don’t think the current offer of red grapes are as good as these.

Peaches and nectarines are all from the Swan Hill and Cobram areas. Lots and lots of options here. Today, we started gift packs which I think are also Perfect for Christmas day feasts. They are between 1.5 - 1.8 kgs and excellent value for the premium fruit that’s in the boxes. Peaches and nectarines are loved by all our customers and these really hit their straps over the January and February months, traditionally peaches earlier and nectarines later. For me, the whites are what I will be taking home.
