Pick of the Week - Truss Tomatoes

“My pick of the week is Truss tomatoes.
Beautiful ripe fruit, superb quality. It’s unusual to see them this low price in mid-summer. The consumer is the winner at all HFM stores, they keep well so stock up this week at your local HFM store.
Longer daylight hours in the growing regions of Victoria have resulted in some bumper harvests of Truss tomatoes. The most popular and versatile in the tomato line-up, they find their place equally as well in a brekky frittata or a lunch sandwich, as they do in the dinner salad bowl.
Choose Truss tomatoes that are firm, vibrantly red and fragrant. They will continue to ripen left on the vine in your fruit bowl.”

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
Truss Tomatoes ripen on the vine, so they should have a rich deep red colour. The vine itself is in indicator of quality and should be a vibrant green.

HOW TO STORE
Store your toms at room temperature, out of the sun and with the stem side down to help prevent moisture from leaving, and bacteria from entering the tomato!

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“It looks like another very good week for salads. Truss tomatoes are very good quality and exceptionally good value. If a snacking tomato is more to your taste, you cannot go past our fabulous eating and very reasonably priced Sweet Delights in punnets.
In hard veg, broccoli remains great value and cauliflowers have fallen in price by half compared to last week. Also on great value is our imperfect Kumera offer. There is vegetables at HFM to suit every budget. Enjoy!”

- David Harris

In Fruit

“Lots of action in the summer fruits and in the transition to winter as well. Lemons have crashed in price and this week; we have great specials of Aussie fruit in all our stores. Galas are coming back quickly, and the bigger fruit is now readily available and good quality, as well as the smaller fruit.
I think nectarines are the pick of the stone fruit. For grapes, I am insisting we only sell the very best variety of fruit from the best growers. We are avoiding the cheaper white varieties; they look absolutely fine but do not eat anything like the better varieties. We have mostly the Ivory variety and over the next week will transition to Sweet Globes - all great eating fruit.
Next week is the start of Ramadan, look for specials on dates in our stores.
