Pick of the Week - Imperfect Pink Lady Apples

This week at Harris Farm, we have decided to help a number of our farmer friends.
Pink Lady apples are now by far the most widely grown and consumed apple in the country. Last spring, unseasonably warm weather in our growing areas affected the flowering and fruit set of quite a large proportion of the pink lady crop. They just didn’t go pink. They are perfect to eat but don’t look good when compared to the highly coloured fruit.
We are going to sell this fruit at bargain prices this week. I hope you, our customers, will take advantage of this and come to understand that fruit should be judged on its taste more than its appearance. Enjoy a not so Pink Lady!

HOW TO PICK
Choose firm, crisp apples free from insect bites. The flesh of the apple should not easily give way to finger pressure.

HOW TO STORE
Apples may ripen quickly at room temperature so store apples away from direct sunlight, preferably in the fridge to keep them crisp. Place them in a plastic bag to help keep them juicy and firm. If you prefer eating apples at room temperature, simply remove a few from the fridge each day. Don't store apples with pears or avocados as they produce a natural gas that speeds the ripening of those fruits.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

Another good week for winter veg coming up. All our stores have good supplies of Brussels sprouts this week - the perfect veg for rainy miserable weather, at least that’s what we are getting in spades in Sydney!

Surprisingly, we are also seeing excellent supplies of cauliflowers and their price has also come back. Real bargains are to be had in the imperfect category with zucchini, Kumera and eggplant all cheap and good quality in the stores.

Those 1 kg pre-pack cocktails are on again and leeks and fennel are both great value. In Sydney, we are expecting a fantastic line of heirloom tomatoes this weekend and their price has whole tomato market is scarce and dear. This means the heirlooms will end the week close to or the same price as our regular tomatoes. These heirlooms are the tomatoes I choose to take home.”

“We have some top value Imperfect Picks this week. Leading the charge are Pink Lady apples. They are not so pink at all, however, are a crunchy fresh good eating apple. We are going to make a fantastic value special in all our stores with these this week.
Hass avocados are also very inexpensive - they are a bit small, on our kg price they are enormous value.
This weekend sees our last plums for the year. Still very good, don’t miss them! What is starting to really eat well are the new season QLD strawberries. They will get better and cheaper every week going forward.
Navel oranges are also easing as supply increases, look for specials in store on these.”
