Pick of the Week - Australian Asparagus

"My pick this week is the Australian asparagus.
September brings in new season Australian asparagus.  For the next 2 to 3 months, all our asparagus will be locally grown. The first crop of the season is always green spears, the white and purple varieties will be with us soon. In addition to our standard bunches, we also have beautiful baby asparagus in stock right now.

Aussie asparagus is the perfect new season spring vegetable. Growing, harvesting and packing this product is very labour intensive and it’s highly perishable, so grab it while you can. You can enjoy it at very competitive prices in all Harris Farm stores this week.
This weekend, there will be imperfect asparagus in store, it's not often available but it’s such a great buy when it is."

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
Look for bright spears with compact tips. Avoid any that look limp or discoloured. When you snap freshly harvested asparagus, it should be crisp, moist and juicy.

HOW TO STORE
If not eating straight away, wrap it in a damp tea towel, pop in a plastic bag and store in the crisper compartment of your fridge. To keep asparagus fresh for longer, trim the ends and stand in a glass with 1-2cm of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and store in fridge.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“It’s spring and we are enjoying glorious weather with spring crops now coming on. English Spinach is extremely popular when it is good quality - which is now! Cheaper than last week, super quality, enjoy this delicate vegetable at its absolute best.
Spring crops of tomatoes are being harvested across the country and as a result Truss tomatoes are a bargain this week as are imperfect gourmet tomatoes. Lebanese cucumbers have also fallen in price as the spring harvest progresses.
Brussels sprouts are plump and absolute delicious and a bargain this week. Corn is also great value this week. We are promoting loose corn rather than the pre-packs we enjoyed last week. Iceberg lettuce and twin packs of new crop cos lettuce round off our vegetable offer. It’s a great week for salads at HFM.

In Fruit

Berries continue to be the focus in this category. Specifically, blueberries are great value and eating fantastically, they get better every year as the farmers focus on flavour as well as size. My personal opinion is that they (the blueberry growers) are doing a better job of developing their category than the strawberry growers are.
As previously, apples and pears are excellent but nothing is cheap. Avocados are really good value and particularly the imperfect offering, cheap and top quality. All citrus is good and we have an excellent line of blood oranges at a great price this week.”
