Pick of the Week - Imperfect Tangelos
“My pick this week is an older type of citrus, the Tangelo.
Years ago, they were quite a popular line but as more and more new and later harvested varieties of mandarins have come onto the market, they are largely ignored. They are a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit. Very easy to peel, sweet flavour... definitely worth a try.
Great in salads with fennel and red onions, they are a versatile fruit. This week, all HFM stores have an incredibly cheap imperfect tangelo option, this is an absolute bargain. They are really worth a try, this is the best time of the year for good eating, good keeping tangelos."

HOW TO PICK
Select fruit that feels firm and heavy for its size, with deep orange skin. Fruit with green spots close to the stem are fine, however those with blemishes, soft spots or mould should be avoided.
HOW TO STORE
Store tangelos in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 2 weeks

In Veg
“Good supplies of most veggies this week means that most of the lines are fairly reasonably priced. In the potato category, we have top quality South Australian washed red potatoes at a very attractive price in all stores.
Truss tomatoes are the pick of the tomato category and far cheaper than a week ago. Pre-packed corn continues to be a great value buy and this week sees Lebanese cucumbers and Telegraph cucumbers both considerably cheaper than last week.
Honey snaps peas are a very good value green veg as are Brussel sprouts. Not cheap at all yet but the early crops of new season Australian asparagus are gradually appearing in our stores, it’s great to have the fresher better eating product arriving. All in all, a good veg week at HFM.”
In Fruit
“An interesting different option this week is that we have a very good imperfect tangelos in our shops this week. Cheap as chips, great eating, worth a try for sure! Get the guys in the shops to peel one for you!
In NSW stores, we have Cara Cara navels on as cheap or even cheaper than our regular navels. Cathy and I am juicing them every morning, they are fantastic! Also, blood oranges are now well underway, they are around for the next ten weeks or so only, enjoy them whilst you can.
Berries are starting to really get going as the weather warms in QLD and northern NSW. The strawberries are excellent and I would hope to have them on special across the company this weekend, and they are already on in QLD which is of course where they are coming from.
Blueberries are also well supplied, I don’t think it matters much if you go for the standard or premium offering both are fantastic.”
