When we opened our Harris Farm Markets store in Dural, we didn’t just want to bring fresh, sustainable produce to the community — we wanted to give back in a meaningful way. That’s why we’re proudly partnering with Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a remarkable local organisation that has been dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for native Australian wildlife for nearly five decades.
Nestled on 35 acres of pristine bushland on the edge of the Berowra Valley National Park, Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is far from a typical wildlife facility. Since its establishment in 1977, it has grown into a vital haven for injured, orphaned and surrendered native animals — from kangaroos and wallabies to wombats, birds and even rescued dingoes.
A Sanctuary Built on Passion and Community Support
Operated almost entirely by dedicated volunteers, the sanctuary fills a critical gap in Sydney’s wildlife rescue network. With licensed wildlife carers, vets and wildlife specialists on site, they work tirelessly to rehabilitate animals with the goal of releasing them back into the wild wherever possible. For those animals who can’t return to their natural habitat, the Sanctuary provides a caring long-term home.
Despite the importance of this work, organisations like Hills Wildlife Sanctuary receive no ongoing government funding and rely heavily on donations, sponsorships and community partnerships to keep their doors open and their animals fed, treated and safe.
How We’re Helping — Food, Care and Infrastructure
At our Dural store, we’re thrilled to be able to support this incredible cause in two practical ways:
- 🥬 Food Donations: Every week, our Dural store donates fresh surplus produce twice weekly to the sanctuary. This not only helps feed the animals (from fruit-loving parrots to grazing kangaroos) but also helps reduce food waste from the store, supporting sustainability on multiple fronts.
- ❄️ Cool Room Donation: Through Neighbourhood Goodness, we’ve provided Hills Wildlife Sanctuary with a brand-new cool room. This essential piece of infrastructure helps the team store perishable food safely and efficiently, ensuring that fresh produce goes further and lasts longer — a real boost for their daily feeding and care operations.

Beyond Rescue: A Vision for the Future
The team at Hills Wildlife Sanctuary isn’t just focused on the present — they’re building toward a bigger, bolder future. Their long-term vision includes establishing a world-class wildlife hospital right here in Sydney’s northwest. This facility would provide specialised veterinary care for injured native animals and help alleviate the pressure on private vets and other rescue organisations, especially during times of crisis like bushfires and floods.
They’re also passionate about education and conservation, aiming to become a hub for training wildlife carers, vets, and volunteers — ultimately empowering more people to make a positive impact for native fauna across NSW.
A Shared Commitment to Community and Nature
Partnering with Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is more than a sponsorship, it’s a shared commitment to protecting the flora and fauna that make our local environment so special.
This partnership reflects what Neighbourhood Goodness is all about — supporting local organisations doing vital work and finding practical ways to make a positive difference. By working alongside Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, we’re helping protect native wildlife, reduce food waste, and strengthen the connection between our store and the community it serves.
