Pick of the Week - Rosto Olive Oil
This week I would like to talk about an extraordinary offer we have on olive oil at the moment. This oil is produced by the Higgs family in the Hunter Valley. They are passionate about the Australian olive oil industry and are just fantastic farmers and producers. Each year, Steve makes sure he sells out all the current crop to make way for their new crop which they release in September. Harris Farm customers are the beneficiaries of this. Many overseas oils don’t even get here and on the supermarket shelves in the same time frame as we have finished the crop for the current season. Oil should be as fresh as possible and stored in a cool dark spot.
Rosto’s 2016 olive harvest in the Upper Hunter valley produced milder oils. Accordingly, the ‘Mellow’ is a very delicate oil made mainly from ripe Koronieki (a tiny olive originating in Greece). It’s my favourite. In our house it’s first choice to use on salads or to cook with. The ‘Extra Oomph’ is a slightly stronger oil made by adding some earlier picked green olives and Coratina olives that lifted the fruitiness. Although both Mellow and Extra Oomph are softer oils from this crop, they have desired balance of fruitiness, pungency and bitterness and this has been recognized by winning several awards. So the oil is perfect for another two years if required but at these prices, we will sell out quickly and then make room for what I have heard is a bumper crop next year.
