It looks like a fantastic time ahead for our Queensland strawberries. Dry weather, cool to cold nights and now some good warm days coming on, with daytime temperatures moving to the high twenties all point to really good fruit.
August is always the peak of the year for strawberry sales and this year will be no exception. Unlike summer strawberries these winter berries not only eat fantastically, but the cool nights mean the fruit keeps really well also. Fabulous for breakfast, to snack on through the day or for dessert at night - they are my favourite winter fruit.
HOW TO PICK
The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green and fresh-looking.
HOW TO STORE
Always keep your strawberries in the fridge and only wash or remove the tops just before eating. Berries are best if they are taken out of the fridge half an hour before eating them.
