The first pear of the year is the Williams pear. Their season is now but only for a short time. Great flavour and inexpensive, they are extremely popular. They ripen extremely quickly, so in this hot weather it is advisable to store them in your fridge once they start to ripen. This is easy to tell as they go yellow and soft. It’s best to refrigerate as soon as this process commences. Three weeks of very high temperatures in the growing region in Shepparton Victoria plus nearly no rainfall will lead to much of the fruit being small and marked, and it will be very cheap all season. Large clean fruit will be relatively dear by comparison.
