Pick of the Week - Imperfect Kumera
Kumera is now a huge line for our industry. At Harris Farm kumera sales are more than double that of any other potato we sell. This incredibly versatile vegetable originated in Polynesia and comes from warmer climates in Australia. The areas we grow this crop tend to have high rainfall periods and when this happens the product is very difficult to harvest, and rapidly grows to a size the market place finds unacceptable.
For us, this is an opportunity. Large, small or misshapen kumera is exactly the same to eat as the perfect product. It is incredibly cheap. Definitely cheaper than most or even all potatoes and in many people’s opinion, tastier also. The last month has seen incredible oversupply of the product and there are bargains in all Harris Farm stores this week. It keeps well in winter, even longer if stored in the fridge. You can buy with confidence and use for some weeks.
