The Mangoes Worth Waiting For
Meet Ryan and Tracy Marr of Trentham Fresh, growing a little later and letting flavour lead the way.
Growing mangoes near Mildura takes some nerve. Winter temperatures can dip to -3°C, while summer days can reach 48°C. But Ryan and Tracy Marr saw a chance to do things differently. Fifteen years on, their family orchard at Trentham Cliffs is bringing mangoes to market beyond the usual northern season.
From their first 270 trees to more than 7,000 today. It’s been a big journey for the Marr family, one season at a time.
The place
Mangoes in Mildura country?
Trentham Cliffs, near Mildura on the NSW and Victorian border, is a long way from Queensland’s traditional mango growing regions. The hot summers and frosty winters made commercial growing seem like a long shot.
Ryan and Tracy stuck with it, finding ways to grow mangoes in their local conditions. What began with a few hundred trees has grown into a family operation with more than 7,000.

The fruit
The good bit about growing later
Trentham Fresh grows Kensington Pride and Honey Gold mangoes. Their harvest starts around October and can run into February, with the last fruit picked around mid-February. By then, mangoes from many other Australian growing regions have finished for the season.
The Marrs’ mangoes spend longer on the tree, developing the sweetness and flavour they’re known for. It’s the taste, rather than a bright skin, that tells their story.

Good to know
How to pick a ripe one
These mangoes might not have the same bright blush as fruit grown in Queensland. Give one a gentle squeeze instead. A little give means it’s ready to eat.
The partnership
Good fruit speaks for itself
We’ve worked with Trentham Fresh for more than 10 years. Ryan and Tracy have built a close relationship with Carlo and our buying team, grounded in a simple belief: what matters most is how a mango eats.
It’s why we keep coming back to their fruit. All that time on the tree brings a sweetness we love sharing with our customers.
