Balmoral Orchards • Toowoomba, Queensland
Twenty years, one handshake and a very good avocado
The people, place and long-standing partnership behind Balmoral Orchards Hass avocados.
Twenty years ago, John walked onto the floor of the Sydney Markets and introduced himself to David Harris.
That conversation turned into a handshake. The handshake turned into a relationship that today sees 90% of the Balmoral Orchards crop come directly to Harris Farm.
It is the kind of supplier relationship that does not happen by accident, and it does not last two decades without something real behind it.
The farm
Balmoral Orchards sits in the elevated country around Toowoomba, Queensland, at around 600 metres above sea level. Toowoomba is known as the Garden City of Australia, and the growing conditions around it are some of the best in the country for avocados.
The altitude is the starting point. Cool temperatures at that elevation slow the ripening process right down, which allows the fruit to develop a depth of flavour you do not get from avocados grown closer to sea level. The result is a Hass with a distinctively buttery, nutty finish.

The soil does the rest. Deep red volcanic earth, well drained, nutrient rich. It is the kind of ground that takes decades to understand and that rewards the farmers who do.
Good avocados are grown by the site that you grow them in, the trees that you have, the root stock to start with, and the workforce you've got that looks after them.John - co-founder of balmoral orchards

The people

Bill and John started Balmoral in 1988. Farm manager Michael Flinn joined them that same year and has been there ever since, more than 35 years of institutional knowledge in one person.
That kind of continuity is not common in commercial farming. It shows up in how the farm runs: daily checks on trees and plants, careful management through the seasons, a team that knows the land and takes the quality of the crop personally.
What customers rarely see is the sheer amount of work that goes into a single tray of avocados. Every tree, every season, every piece of fruit involves daily decisions and careful hands. Growing an avocado to the standard Balmoral sets takes time, money and attention that is largely invisible by the time the fruit reaches a shelf.
Balmoral has kept the operation deliberately small to protect that standard. Rather than scaling up and spreading thin, they have concentrated on delivering top quality in a focused environment. It has been the right call for nearly 40 years.
What the relationship looks like
Harris Farm buys the full Balmoral crop. Not just the premium fruit that meets cosmetic specifications, but the imperfect fruit too, through our Imperfect Picks program. John and Bill grow it, we find it a home.
That approach, buying a total crop rather than cherry-picking the prettiest tray, matters to growers. It means they can plan, invest and grow with confidence. It is also how good farming relationships are supposed to work.

Bill is direct about why the partnership has lasted:
We value the relationship because they are a world class, top quality retailer, and we have always focused on quality, quality, quality.Bill - co-founder of balmoral orchards
Balmoral Hass avocados
Balmoral Hass season runs from July through October. If you have eaten a Harris Farm avocado recently, there is a good chance it came from this farm and from the hands of people who have been growing them since before most of our customers were born.
They are worth seeking out.
