Dave's Market Update
In Fruit
“Lots happening again this week. If you are a rockmelon fan then this is your week! These large flavoursome beauties from sunny Mildura are full of flavour and about as cheap as they get. They won’t stay this price, so enjoy them while you can.
Pretty much the end of the Hass avocado season this week or next. At this time, you need to eat them within a couple of days of purchase, we will be changing over to new season Shepards over the next ten days or so. We are also near the end of what has been an excellent peach season. Our peach buyer has secured a fantastic line of large yellow peaches that are amazingly cheap and eating extremely well.
Good old bananas which have been fairly firm in price are cheaper this week. We have a couple of excellent value imperfect lines as well in the fruit category. Lemons which to me (the imperfect option) makes huge sense and also plums! There is such a huge variety of different options that we seem to have a new plum every week. Our plum buyers in both states try to have an inexpensive yet good eating option of plum every week to please the pocket.

Enjoy the autumn offerings as we transition over from summer.”

In Veg
“Still not much happening here. Corn and Kumera continue to be the go-to vegetables in our house; the corn is really eating super well at this time and is very reasonably priced. It’s young and tender and doesn’t need a lot of cooking.
Kumera as always is an excellent source of carbs and personally, I find it hard to go past the imperfect product. Broccoli is getting dearer compared to last week but is still very good value as is broccolini.
Great value also to be found in the imperfect zucchini line and Lebanese cucumber are good and affordable.

Dave's Pick of the Week
“Rockmelons are at a fantastic price this week at Harris Farm Markets. It is the perfect time to enjoy this deliciously sweet, fleshed fruit full of that Mediterranean flavour everyone loves. The season is similar to most other fruit, running two or three weeks later than normal and floods destroyed the early crops.
The rocks are coming from the Mildura area and are the very sweet Sucrose variety. As a result, the fruit has been dear and this late burst of hot Autumn weather has given us some fantastic late-season fruit and prices are way down on the last few weeks.
This fruit is the best eating, best value fruit of the year. In my opinion, Rockmelon is an excellent source of vitamin C and a source of beta carotene.
Try them with yoghurt for breakfast, in salads or pair it with savoury flavours like cheese and prosciutto.”
