Dave's Market Update
In Fruit
“It’s all about mangoes in fruit this week. The Darwin season for KP’s is now right on, it’s a good fortnight behind the last couple of years. They are now ripe and as tasty as they get, not particularly cheap but very very good eating.
The other significant drop in fruit is with large far North QLD rockmelons. I prefer the older softer style of Rockies but now the major supermarkets won’t support growers with those varieties; it reminds me of the dramas we went through with tomatoes thirty years ago, again at the behest of the majors.
Blueberries are still fantastic, however, we have had a weather event in Coffs Harbour that will disrupt the harvest over this weekend.
In citrus, premium lemons are very difficult to purchase, however, we have excellent supplies of imperfects at around one third the premium price.
In NSW, we have been lucky to find an excellent late pick of Cara Cara navels, not dear at all but a great substitute for the blood oranges which are now finished until next July.
Apples and pears chug on, however, some of the varieties are coming to an end as our attention moves to stonefruit.”

In Veg
“Lots of great veggies in our stores this week. Particularly, lebanese cucumbers and those gorgeous baby cukes; both of which are ridiculously cheap this week which goes nicely with our truss tomatoes, to allow a bargain priced salad this week.
Corn is easing in price, however, I am led to believe it will be next week when the really big numbers hit the market.
Asparagus continues to be an absolute bargain and this week, celery is also very reasonable.
Again, we have a special buy with potatoes; that most staple of veg and this week, it’s the red washed variety that are on special.
Plenty of good rhubarb around and I hope to see that on special in our stores this weekend. Look for the bargains and you will feed your family very reasonably at Harris farm this week.”

Dave's Pick of the Week
“The weather is getting warmer, and we are getting some fantastic melons now from far North Queensland. Last couple of weeks, it was seedless watermelon and this week it’s rockmelon that is coming on.
Melons only get their flavour when the weather is warm and that same weather which is now in Sydney means it’s the food we want to eat. Rockmelons fell out of favour a few years ago, however, are now regaining their popularity.
These melons are quite large and this week at a $3.99 ticket; are very close to half last week’s price.
You can leave them out of the fridge for a couple of days only if they are whole. Once cut or if you buy a cut melon, they MUST go in the fridge. Enjoy this taste of summer from Harris Farm Markets.”
