Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Kent Pumpkin - Wed 14 May 2025

Dave's Market Update

In VEG

“Solid week coming up in veg. Pumpkin which likes a few cold nights and even a frost are eating well and very reasonably priced. Look for a very cheap ticket this weekend. Along with cauliflowers which have halved in price this weekend and imperfect Kumera, I think we have your winter veg sorted.

Add to this imperfect Black zucchini which have been cheap and top quality for a fortnight now plus reasonably priced broccoli and broccolini and you can eat well and save money this weekend. By this weekend, we will have a fantastic Telegraph cucumber special available as well.”

In FRUIT

“It’s a very good time of the year for citrus. Each week, the navel oranges eat a little better than the previous week. QLD Imperial Mandarins are still excellent, and all stores now have a really good value line of imperfects in this fruit. Ruby grapefruit and lemons are both well supplied.

Grapes are starting to wind down. It’s been a fantastic season, and I think everyone is ready to move onto the next seasonal treat which will be all those delicious berries from Queensland. Actually, the raspberries are pretty good in the meantime, they just don’t keep well but definitely fantastic eating. With avocados, our G Max green skin avos are a superb piece of fruit and as a cheaper option the imperfect fruit, we have which are all Hass are very cheap.”

Dave's Pick of the Week - JAP Pumpkin

To me is the best eating of all pumpkins. If you want to make that budget stretch a bit further, look to buy a whole Jap pumpkin at HFM this weekend. A whole pumpkin left uncut can sit at home for weeks until you are ready to cook it. Very cheap, tastes great and very healthy!
