IN VEG:
In general news markets well supplied with zucchini, eggplant, tender stem broccoli, red caps, celery and coriander. There is a plethora of good quality tomatoes in the markets again this week with plenty of value in truss tomatoes and numbers show no sign of relenting. Plenty of great specials this week in the snacking tomatoes range – the pick being sweet delights.
Kestrel potatoes are on promotion in all stores this week. At this time of year, Kestrels come from Gatton in Queensland. Reed avocadoes are now in stores. A green skin avocado, Reeds are always well received. This is the right time for Reeds as they have reached that stage of maturity where they have that terrific smooth, nutty flavour.
IN FRUIT:
My pick of the week is absolutely honey gold mangoes, they are fantastic! The flavour of stone fruit has leapt ahead recently with yellow peach varieties and white nectarines being my top choices. Apricots, especially the dearer stack varieties, are really good and have eased in price. I am afraid the cherries are just not eating as well this year, too much rain at the wrong time. Hopefully the later areas and varieties will be better.
