Dave's Market Update - 26.02.20
IN FRUIT:
In the markets this week, you will find plenty of great eating yellow and white nectarines. The majority of our nectarines are now coming from Cobram in Victoria, and you can’t go wrong with either the white or yellow flesh; both are excellent this week. All the grapes are eating sensational as they should at this time of the year. We are in the peak of grape season and there is a smorgasbord of high quality grapes to choose from. White, red, black seedless, black sapphire, Muscat, cotton candy and the pick of the week Sultana or natural grapes are all available. There is also still plenty of good eating melon available. Seedless watermelon and rockmelons are in a sweet spot.
The Australian Mangosteen season is swinging into gear. Unfortunately, the Australian mangosteen season is a short one. Primarily out of the Daintree in Far North Queensland mangosteens can be eaten by themselves or in a fruit salad. Australian mangosteens are fantastic quality at present and there should be some promotional opportunities in the next week or so.
IN VEG:
Snackable carrots are a little gem from Tasmania; beautiful, sweet baby carrots that do not require peeling and you can eat the entire carrot. The ideal healthy snack and the sweetness of the carrot makes it a winner with the kids. Snackable carrots are the perfect size for the school lunch box. Washed potatoes from South Australia are great value this week - the Maranca washed potato is a low carbohydrate potato which is distinguished by its deep golden flesh and long oval shape. The Maranca washed potato holds its shape while cooking, making it user friendly and the ideal potato for mashing, roasting or just a simple potato salad. The season for this variety of washed potatoes is a relatively short, so make the most of it!
Black and grey zucchini from the Sydney basin are well supplied this week. Grey in particular are back in a good price range; almost half the price of last week. Excellent volumes of good quality broccolini are also in the markets this week, they make a good substitute for broccoli which has kicked up considerably in price this week. There is also more eggplant and sweet potato coming into the markets this week.
