Dave's Market Update - 25 January 2023
In Fruit
There are some really good fruit options for the return to school week. Bananas are the lunch box staple and are on special in all stores. They will be a feature this weekend, and even better value.
White grapes are also a favourite amongst kids, and we will have them at a great value price in all stores this weekend. The better eating white grapes are still coming from Queensland with the Southern grape season being around two weeks late this year.
Mainland cherries are basically over with the majority of the fruit now coming from Tasmania. Quality is exceptional although slightly more expensive.
Stone fruit is all looking pretty good, but if I had to choose, I would go with the white peaches. They are eating amazing at the moment.
In stores right now we are also featuring organic blackberries from Stanthorpe in the Southern Downs region of Queensland. The fruit is fantastic eating and a price we very rarely get to experience.
In Veg
Imperfect zucchini, shallots, kale, shallots, Dutch carrots, imperfect eggplant, lettuce, and loose corn are all well supplied in the markets this week. Keep a look out for tender stem broccoli, which we are featuring on special at all stores.
Still plenty of good news in the tomatoes category with truss remaining the standout option. Last week’s special on Sweet Delights was so well received we have decided to run them again this week – they are the perfect snack for the kids return to school lunch boxes. Keeping with the back to school theme we are also running snackable carrots from Tasmania at a red hot price. Snackable carrots are very sweet eating and the perfect size for lunch boxes.
Each year around this time we give Reed avocados from Mildura a real push in the stores. We wait till now because this is the time of the year they actually eat the way a Reed should. Reeds are characterised by their round shape, and they tend to be larger than the Hass avocados we are accustomed to. They have a fantastic buttery texture and a strong nutty flavour. For those who haven’t dabbled with Reed avocados this weekend is the opportune time as the quality is superb and they are on a super special in all stores.
