Dave's Market Update - 12.07.16
IN FRUIT
Papaya from North Queensland is well supplied this week and is eating really well. With berry supply remaining disrupted due to the inclement weather we are slightly devoid of fruit options. Now we have one – Papaya. The papaya in store is refreshingly sweet so it’s never been a better time for those customers who are not regular shoppers of papaya to give it a go. Guaranteed there will be no turning back. Green and Gold kiwis are well supplied this week and both taste sensational. In particular I love the flavour of the gold kiwi. If you haven’t yet tried the gold I urge you to give it a go, as the season for this fruit is only a relatively short one. Queensland bananas are still a go to this week. With growing condition perfect in northern Queensland (above average temperatures) fruit supply is strong and the quality is very good for this time of the year.
IN VEGETABLE
Supply on many vegetable lines continues to be tricky due to rain events and cooler temperatures. Products such as broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, sweet corn, tomatoes and salad mix are still inconsistent with supply. No need for panic however, things should turn round as the weather slowly begins to warm up over the next few weeks. Products that are well supplied include Silverbeet spinach, kumera, brown onions, beetroot, Jap pumpkin and fennel. Silverbeet this week is from the Sydney basin and is exceptionally good quality and very reasonable in price. Still an old favourite in many families with the health benefits being well known… When looking for some comfort food I always enjoy a silverbeet and cheese Quiche.
