Dave's Market Update - 05.07.16
IN FRUIT
The Cavendish bananas are still in excellent supply and the eating quality is excellent. Seedless watermelon from the Northern Territory is also excellent in quality and value. This watermelon unfortunately comes at a time where the demand is not at its greatest however this fruit is superb so I encourage customers to keep in on the shopping list.. Sweet as honey and crunchy as an apple I assure you will not be disappointed! Unfortunately, rain has interrupted the supply of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. This is no need for concern however, as the impact is not great and the duration will be relatively short. And of course, you cannot go past the Navel oranges this week which are in the peak of their season.
IN VEGETABLE
Some cooler conditions and intermittent rain in the North has slowed down supply across a few lines this week including broccoli, broccolini, green beans, Brussels sprouts, cauliflowers and corn.
Better news in veg is that capsicums are all well supplied this week. From both Bowen and Bundaberg in Queensland, red capsicums in particular are excellent quality and at great prices this week. Did you know that all red capsicums start their life cycle as a green capsicum before changing to a red colour upon maturity?
Other lines that are well supplied include Chinese cabbage, imperfect eggplant, cabbage, kumera, Savoy cabbage, telegraph cucumbers and leeks.
The leeks we are promoting this week are from NSW. From Mangrove Mountain on the Central Coast, these tasty leeks are a must for winter. My favourite way to use leeks is in a creamy leek soup with sourdough bread on a cold winter’s day.
For something a bit different, we are promoting ginger which is fantastic value this week. Currently the supply of ginger in the market is very strong. Australian ginger is recognised as some of the best in the world. Ginger is excellent in gingerbreads, cookies, crackers, and cakes, as well as ginger ale and beer. Ginger is also excellent for adding flavouring to dishes, very popular in Asian cooking but just as good Indian, Chinese, Korean and Japanese food.
