Dave's Market Update - 04.10.16
IN FRUIT
Our end of season citrus from Victoria and South Australia are suffering substantial damage from the recent flooding. This will mean all citrus from now to Christmas will be dear and fair to average quality at best. Blueberries continue to be cheap and good, I think this is the best run on blueberries for many years. This week also sees a substantial increase in the supply of papaya. It continues to be my favourite breakfast. We mix the papaya with lime or lemon juice, then add either blueberries or passionfruit plus squeeze a little extra lemon or lime over the top, it’s fantastic.
IN VEGETABLE
Lots and lots of good news here with very few exceptions. Iceberg lettuce (much of it from the Sydney basin), asparagus, Truss tomatoes, Wombok, broccolini and leeks all continue to be cheap and in some cases even cheaper than the last few weeks. Lebanese cucumbers and baby cues are falling in price. Kale, English spinach and green beans are all cheap and good too. There will be endless options for excellent vegetables this week. The only problem lines are zucchini which is in between crops, and most potatoes and onions which are partly underwater in Victoria and South Australian growing areas.
