Blood oranges have been in the markets for a few weeks but are only now starting to eat well. With a flesh that is brilliantly dark blood red, blood oranges have an aromatic raspberry edge to their flavour which clearly distinguishes the taste from any other orange. The season is only a fairly short one so be sure to enjoy this wonderful fruit while it lasts.Great news in the berry category with blueberries and raspberries from the north coast of NSW and strawberries from Queensland all gradually increasing in supply with the fruit eating quality very good.
An old cliche in our industry is that a week is a long time. Supply has been severely affected by some of the coldest winter conditions we have experienced in many years, however some warmer days late last week has lead to some relief. Some vegetable prices have begun to ease particularly snow peas, black zucchini, corn, carrots and sugar snap peas. Lines that remain difficult to source include cauliflowers, broccoli, beans, Lebanese cucumbers and celery.Desiree potatoes are at their very best at present and on special at all Harris Farm stores at a phenomenal price. From the rich soils of Virginia in South Australia they have a magnificent yellow flesh and a waxy texture. Desiree potatoes are firm and hold their shape and useful for a variety methods of cooking from roasting to mashing and salads.Snow peas are excellent value this week - half the price of last week, a must for this week’s shopping list.
