Dave's Market Update - 30.01.18

IN FRUIT
More hot weather, but more humid than hot actually, makes for excellent fruit sales. Highly variable weather in Tassie means their cherry season is rapidly coming to an end. Some days, good fruit will be available, some days not. Every year you can count on the week Valentine's Day falls in as signalling the end of the season. Peaches, nectarines, grapes, rockmelons and lychees are all excellent eating and reasonable to buy.
Figs are flooding the market with some very cheap but good punnets in the stores. In berries, our old-fashioned blackberries are at their peak this week, however, the weather in Victoria is really hot, so these are a day by day proposition. For something new this week, there is more Dragonfruit than usual available and new season Gala apples, the first apple of the year, are in the markets now. The very first arrived from South Australia at the end of last week but the heat spoiled them. This week we have local fruit from Bilpin, an hour’s drive from Sydney fresh in the markets every day, they don’t even see a cool room. These, of course, will improve every day, especially if the predicted cooler weather arrives in the middle of the week.
IN VEGETABLESGreat news this week is the massive drop in broccoli prices. It is about half the price of 2 weeks ago and far better quality. Cauliflowers and all kumera remain inexpensive as does iceberg lettuce. Instead of iceberg lettuce though, could I recommend our hydroponic lettuces grown right in Sydney in Kellyville, which are picked fresh and delivered fresh every day. For a change, try a grey zucchini. Best of all, we have some excellent flavoured gourmet tomatoes from NZ in our stores this week.
