IN FRUIT
Great summer fruit everywhere! Australian grapes are now in full swing and they get better every day. Probably the whites are the best eating this week. Raspberries and blackberries are the best eating in the berry category. Lots of cheap bananas everywhere, which always happens when stonefruit is around. I love good lychees and this week the good ones, plump, tasty fruit with a small seed are just starting. Limes are coming back in price and all varieties of mangoes are good and cheap. My pick of these this week is the Honeygolds and this week we have imperfects on very cheap. All the peaches and nectarines are underway and as always in the early season, they can be a bit hit or miss. My choice this week is the nectarines, especially the yellow variety.
Apart from our amazing potted herb offer, there are some other interesting options this week. My favourite tomato is an ox heart. These are in flush this week. They don’t keep all that well, they get ripe very quickly, however, the flavour is amazing. With a beautiful piece of mozzarella and fresh basil leaves, you are not going to have a better taste of summer. All tomatoes are fairly good and not expensive this week. The warmer weather provides ideal growing conditions for most vegetables. The other excellent option is the Grande asparagus in store and at its best. This asparagus is bigger and thicker than our regular bunch, in fact, it is exactly double the amount of asparagus, you are effectively purchasing the equivalent of two bunches when you buy one Grande. The flavour will amaze you. Cauliflowers have halved in price compared to last week and so has eggplant. All cucumbers are still plentiful and iceberg lettuce is top quality and inexpensive. So a great week for salads at HFM. Beans and mushrooms are both very good value also, but if you have never tried ox hearts, this would be a great week to do so.
