Dave's Market Update - 20.03.18

IN FRUIT
At last, we are seeing a good quantity of avocados in the market. Avocados don’t like heavy rain and there has been lots of that up North but the roads are open again and avocado will be on everyone’s menu again for a while. I love the flavour of those greenskin Shepard avocados. All the grapes continue to be excellent and the small great value topless pineapples are still available. Lemons are finally easing in price and this week sees Kanzi apples and chestnut supplies increasing. Mangoes are getting tricky, we have Honeygolds from down south this week. They look absolutely terrible but are amazingly good to eat. All berries are quite dear, by far our cheapest berry is the small end of crop strawberries in our stores. No strawberries keep all that well at this time of the season but these are good value. We also have some very good late blackberries from Tassie that are very good eating. These next few weeks is a very tough time for blueberries, I for one won’t be taking them home at this stage.
IN VEGETABLES
One of my favourites, Dutch carrots, are coming into their own again this week. They will be close to half last week’s price. There are a couple of great bargains in our imperfect range, kumera in particular and zucchinis both represent great value. The cobs of corn are young, sweet and inexpensive. Brussels sprouts are coming back in price and by the weekend both Telegraph and Lebanese cucumbers will be considerably cheaper than last week. The not so good news is that quality tomatoes are very hard to find.
