Dave's Market Update - 20.02.18

IN FRUIT
Lots of excellent options here again this week. It’s hard to go past the white seedless as the most popular grape, the reds and blacks tend to come into their own a little later in the season. I suggest you try the natural sultanas or, if the budget stretches to it, our tiny black currant grapes. Neither are around for long but both are delicious. The biggest news of the week is the arrival (in quantity) of new season Shepard avocados. Probably not quite as good eating as the old season Hass, however they are quite acceptable and they will quickly bring the avocado price back to reality. We will continue to offer both in our stores for at least all this week.
We have lots of very cheap imperfect limes in store this week, Tegan Blue plums will be the main plum for the next few weeks and both guavas and mangosteens are arriving in good quantities. I can probably live without guavas however mangosteens really are a special piece of fruit - if you have not tried them please do. Superb quality Gala apples are starting from later areas further south and Williams pears are underway, with the smaller fruit being very inexpensive this week. Figs are now at their best and with slightly cooler weather in the growing areas will keep a little better than they have been. Still good and inexpensive passionfruit are available in-store and by the weekend we will have our very late season KP mangoes from Mildura on sale.
IN VEGETABLES
All cucumbers are well priced this week, particularly Lebanese cucumbers which are around half the price of 10 days ago. Sampari tomatoes are cheap and excellent quality and imported asparagus is plentiful and about as cheap as it gets. Spinach is good value as is our large imperfect kumera, imperfect zucchinis and imperfect eggplant. Lettuce looks like being cheaper as the week goes on, and the wonderful New Zealand capsicums and tomatoes are now finished for the year. A bit of cooler weather around the country will help improve the quality of all vegies this week.
