Dave's Market Update - 16.1.19

IN FRUIT
A nice change this week is well priced passionfruit. Great with berries and papaya, they are a bargain this week, especially the nets. Seedless watermelon must go up with this weather, however it’s still reasonable right now. Yellow peaches are still cheap and better eating than the nectarines currently available. Grapes are easing back as are figs. Both will be great value by the weekend or early next week. Rockmelons and blackberries, which traditionally hit their straps in February, have started to increase in supply. Papaya is a bargain which normally doesn’t happen in January, so enjoy them this week also. Limes continue to be cheaper than lemons, but at least the lemons are now available again from Australia. Time to forget about apples, we will have new season Galas in store late next week or the week after. Enjoy the plentiful summer fruit until then.
IN VEG
This weather really takes a toll on many of our vegetables. Lots of product that has been really good goes downhill fast and does not keep at all well. So most leafy greens and cucumbers etc. from local farms will be dearer this week. There are still great bargains in tomatoes, especially the imperfects and snacking varieties. However, I expect they also will be in shorter supply next week. Corn is coming on strongly, it seems to be able to withstand the heat quite well and strangely okra is cheap. Most beans are heat effected but we are lucky to have a supplier in Tasmania where it is not quite so hot and their product is still excellent.
