Dave's Market Update - 15.05.18
IN FRUIT
The mandarin crop is taking a breather this week and we will see dearer prices this week. However, Aussie navels will fill this gap. They are a bit pale compared to the imported product we have been selling, but the taste is fresher and the price cheaper. Pink Ladies and Granny Smiths remain my pick of the traditional apples varieties and Kanzi of the newer apples. In grapes, I would only recommend the Crimson Seedless, all the others are now a bit old. Hass avocados remain cheap, smaller fruit is where the bargains are this week. Rockmelons are good and this is the time Kiwi Gold comes into its own. The imperfect Corella pears we had on special last week proved to be great value and very popular. Pomegranates are now fantastic eating and on special in lots of our stores this week.
IN VEGETABLES
The season is changing, with a dramatic temperature drop and heavy rain in Victoria finishing off summer crops that have been hanging on until last week. Tomatoes were still coming from Victoria but that is all over now and tomato prices are rising. At Harris Farm, we have some very good tomato options with cherry truss, cherry tomatoes and to a lesser extent sweet delight tomatoes all remaining very well priced. Beans, leeks and Dutch carrots are all fantastic quality and well-priced. Iceberg lettuce is very reasonable, parsnips (especially the imperfect option) are well priced and beetroot, both loose and in bunches are easing in price. Most unusually for this time of the year, we have a flush of well-priced baby eggplant from Queensland in store this week. They are one of my favourites. Much thinner with fewer seeds, they have a more delicate flavour and are preferred by many people who know their eggplant.
