Dave's Market Update - 10.04.18
IN FRUIT
This week we have some fairly decent eating Imperial mandarins in our stores. They are not quite as good as they will be in May which to me is the month for Imperials however, they are a new fruit and make a refreshing change. In grapes, it is now definitely time to focus on Crimson Seedless and the Black America varieties. The old-fashioned muscatels are no longer so good and the whites are going soft very quickly. The fact is the Crimsons and Black America varieties are picked some weeks later than the whites and so are just a fresher grape. In apples, the Kanzi and Jazz are now at their best, our Kanzis from Batlow are something really special. A most unusual dry spell in Victoria is now rewarding us with better strawberries than we normally have in mid-autumn. We still have very good raspberries and I would really recommend our premium brand for a real taste treat. A bit dearer than the standard supermarket brand and variety but they are really worth that bit extra you pay for them. Lemons are cheap, passionfruit are easing in price and next week we will be in full swing with our Flavour Fall plums which are really special. Best plum this week is probably still the October Suns.
IN VEGETABLES
The tomato market is sliding again. As always, the less than perfect fruit is the first to decline in price. Hence we are seeing real bargains in our imperfect pick selection this week. The corn crop down south in Victoria should be finished but the perfect weather has meant there is still lots coming from there, but now Queensland has started also. The result is of course bargains in corn. Cauliflowers and broccolini are also oversupplied. Fennel is very good and cucumbers are still cheap. The two best bargains are in zucchini and eggplant but especially the imperfects in both these. Enjoy!
