Dave's Market Update - 05.12.18

harris farm market update

IN FRUIT
Mangoes are nothing short of a smorgasbord this week with all varieties in abundance and great value. Our tray sale mango offers are a highlight with Kensington Prides, R2E2s and Honey Golds all on offer. Cherries are eating better every day as we move into some of the better darker varieties. Peaches and nectarines are eating great as we now come into some of the better varieties, with peaches being the standout. There’s plenty of excellent value in our Imperfect Picks stone fruit now with peaches, nectarines, mangoes and apricots all on offer. With only skin blemishes rendering the fruit imperfect, rest assured they are perfectly good to eat. Hass avocados from Pemberton in Western Australian are well supplied this week and in my opinion are amongst the best eating avocados we produce. The old saying of you get what you pay for is pertinent in avocados with cheaper imported alternatives available, however the eating experience doesn’t even come close to the WA avocados we have in store.

IN VEGETABLES
There’s plenty of good things happening in the markets this week. The excellent run of good quality cucumbers is continuing with all varieties in strong supply. Lettuce, snow peas, sugar snaps, rhubarb, kumera, cauliflower, broccolini, leeks and zucchini are all well supplied. The recent hot strong winds have done to damage to the Sydney basin leafy vegetable and herb crops, but nothing to cause alarm. The turnaround for these crops at this time of the year is very short and back on track before Christmas. There is plenty of excellent value in the tomato category this week. Supply has been phenomenal and with no signs of slowing down. Truss, gourmet tomatoes and almost all of the snacking tomato range are in abundance with great specials in all stores at prices which feel like 1980s prices!
