Dave's Market Update - 04.07.18

IN FRUIT
The pick in citrus this week is our Imperial mandarins, supplied out of the Southern regions the fruit is eating fantastic and is a perfect size, especially for the kids. With the weather not favouring the growing conditions for berries, the start of the week will see volumes drop off. If the weather predictions to clear up are correct then the back end of the week will see supply improve. As a great source of vitamin C and in good supply, kiwifruit should definitely make the shopping list this week, both the green and gold. Seedless melon from Lakeland in far North Queensland is also very good at the moment as are passionfruit and tangelos, and our nets of navel oranges represent great value.
IN VEGETABLES
It’s all about tomatoes this week. From gourmet to truss to our pick of the week, the red and yellow snacking tomatoes. These little gems are left on the vine to ripen allowing the natural sugars to develop to give you that burst of flavour. Pick fruit with good quality skin and store at room temperature to give you the true sweet taste. Victorian leeks are in abundance and a welcomed price drop across all stores. Loose beetroot is good value with supply coming from NSW and Tasmania. Queensland snow peas and red capsicum continue to be prominent in stores. All cabbages are in good supply and Brussels sprouts are starting to build up in volume, look out for the prepacked offer which represents the best value. Zucchini is plentiful and there is a bargain to be had especially with our imperfect zucchini. Bring out those rhubarb recipes as supply begins to increase with stock out of NSW, Queensland and Victoria.
