Dave's Market Update - 02.01.19

IN FRUIT
As predicted the other week, there has been damage to KP mangoes up north, my recommendation is to stick with the Honey Golds now. These are a little later than the KPs to harvest and seem to have withstood the inclement weather somewhat better than the KPs. There are still plenty of good mangoes to harvest, it’s just a problem this week and possibly the next also. My main story this week is about limes absolutely in glut and a viable and cheaper alternative to the imported lemons we rely on every year at this time. Berries are reasonable this week, only raspberries are in short supply. Out of the choices in the peach and nectarine category, my pick this week is the white peaches, although I must say I did sample an excellent donut peach on New Year’s Eve. Apricots are still juicy and excellent, as are lychees. I would also like to give a plug to the Valencia oranges we are enjoying at home. I put half a ruby grapefruit in with two Vals every morning. Vals are a summer orange, Australian grown and at their best right now.
IN VEGIES
Supplies are fairly good for most lines. Again, salad lines are well supplied with lettuce well priced, cucumbers dropping in price and lots of good tomato options, with truss and medley mix leading the charge here. Eggplant, particularly the local field grown option, is very well priced, mushrooms continue to be if anything oversupplied and we have a very good potato option with our 2 kg kestrel offer this week.
