daves market update may autumn
IN FRUIT

The kids are back to school this week and we have the treble going for the school lunch box. All Harris Farm stores have a mandarin special, some have small, some the imperfect line and a couple large fruit. Kids (and big kids) love mandos. May is the month for them, they don’t get better than right now. The other two lines are bananas and pink lady apples. These are not necessarily on special but are in every store at a great price. We are now selling only one line of plums, Flavourfalls, they are fantastic. Not all of these plums are fantastic, in fact, the fruit from Victoria is pretty ordinary. It is the Western Australian fruit that we are selling that is really special. Black and Crimson grapes are still top quality and cheap, and this week sees the start of Bravo apples, another of the new variety apples, very popular indeed don’t be put off by their black appearance. Finally, if quince paste or quince on your breakfast cereal is your thing, the fruit is at its best right now. That will be the case for the next few weeks.

IN VEGETABLES
We are starting to see more of the traditional cold weather vegies in store this week - things like parsnips, swedes and leeks are really starting to sell. Best value this week is probably to be found in kumera, zucchini, broccoli, kestrel potatoes, imperfect eggplant and beans, and of course the imperfect lines of most of these vegetables are just so cheap. This run of excellent dry weather is making life easy for buying top quality vegetables and at a reasonable price. Tomatoes, lettuce, spinach and telegraph cucumbers are also still great quality and cheap. As the old season pumpkin and butternut are replaced with the better keeping new season, there will be bargains to be had here too.
