Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Dutch Cream Potatoes - 15 May 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

"We a have couple of excellent vegetable specials this week. We have an excellent line of brushed Dutch cream potatoes, freshly dug at a bargain price. Great cooking potato, excellent value.

As well our NSW stores have fantastic cup mushrooms, again superb quality, also a bargain. Other attractive vegetable lines are Iceberg lettuce, brussels sprouts and shallots. Broccoli, which jumped in price at the end of last week and into this week looks though it will be back in price this weekend."

In Fruit

"Lots of things happening in the citrus category. Our imported citrus season is over and local Valencias are fast coming to an end, so we now have the first of our Aussie navels in store. They look a bit pale, however I am juicing them at home every day and they are making a very good juice. Our fresh orange juice sold in store is still made from Vals as the navel juice deteriorates very quickly whereas Vals keep well for 5 to 7 days. Also, in this citrus category we have some of the later mandarins underway now, the Daisy variety are particularly good eating this week. Also, lemons are really plentiful and cheap.

This will be our last week with plums, and we are now selling Packham pears instead of Williams. The first of the new season berries are a little later than in other years. Grapes are nearly over after what has been a cracker of a season.
Kiwi Gold, Papaya and topless pineapples are all excellent substitutes for berries at breakfast time. There are a few very nice custard apples coming through also and of course the apple season still has a long way to go."

Dave's Pick of the Week

"This week's Dutch cream potatoes from Thorpdale, in Victoria, are my pick of the week.

This waxy, creamy yellow flesh spud with its renowned buttery flavour, is ideal for a great mash or potato bake. Also, try bringing these spuds to the boil to partially cook them, then drain and bake to give you that crispy golden texture with a soft fluffy centre.
Representing great value this week, be sure to stock up. They were dug through the week especially for Harris Farm - you can certainly shop with confidence knowing that they are as fresh as can be! Kept in a cool, dark and dry place rest assured they will last."
