Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Reed Avocados - 10 January 2024
Dave's Market Update
In Fruit
"The floods have damaged vegetable crops more than fruit. Great quality mangoes this week, all stores have a special of either Large Honey Golds or imperfect mangoes and all NSW stores will have KPs on special this weekend. Three lines of stone fruit not to be missed this weekend are yellow peaches, seedless watermelon and white seedless grapes. For the next couple of weeks, peaches will be at their best. My golden rule is January is for peaches and February for nectarines. Eating the fruit that’s in season is smart from both a flavour and a price perspective. The grapes are easing in price and great value.
We are full swing into Reed avocadoes this week, great tasting and excellent value. They are only around for a month or so and make an interesting change from the Hass variety. New season apples are just around the corner, there are some in the market already. In our view, they are not ready yet, we will wait 10 days or so.
Sadly, mainland cherries were completely wiped out over the weekend and in Tasmania lots of damage in places, however we have found some really nice stock, undamaged and will have these on special this weekend.
In Veg
A lot of our veg at this time of the year comes from Victoria. I am sure you have all seen the graphic images on television showing the flood situation down there on the media. This means supply is somewhat uncertain for many lines and what we do get may not keep particularly well. We do have some excellent glasshouse crops which are obviously not affected. Truss tomatoes and baby cukes have eased and we have a sensational line of loose Cherry Truss at a dead cheap price, don’t miss them!"

Dave's Pick of the Week
“Reed avocados are not well known, but much loved by those who do know them. They are larger than most avocados, with a skin that remains green when the fruit ripens and are round in shape unlike most other avocados. They have a nutty flavour quite different to the far better-known black skin Hass variety and cut fruit stores well in the fridge - again different to other varieties. They do have a somewhat large seed, but the fruit is very large also meaning each avocado provides a lot of fruit.
Late December to January and February is when they are at their best, with fruit coming from Southern and Western Australia and southern Queensland. They are my first choice of avocado at this time of the year.
In our NSW stores, we will have South Australian fruit and Queensland fruit in the Qld stores. The fat in avos and particularly reeds is good fat and keeps you healthy. If you have not tried them before this is the week to do it, they are on special, well priced, great value and cheaper than their dark-skinned cousins in all HFM stores this week.” - David Harris
