DAVE'S MARKET UPDATE

IN FRUIT:

Kensington pride mangoes from Katherine have started. Katherine has not experienced the rainfall that Darwin has, and as a result the mangoes are looking great, however the Darwin Kensington pride mangoes are eating magnificently and that’s what I'll be taking home this week. The Darwin fruit is showing the effects from a serious volume of rain and a very windy season, but the mangoes eat as sweet as honey and are a real treat. Look past the superficial markings and rough appearance and enjoy these Darwin mangoes. Our tray sale mangoes are all Darwin fruit and great value, whilst we have a 10kg bulk box offer for even cheaper. I must stress that Darwin mangoes must be eaten within a few days of purchase.

There are some good things happening with melons in the markets this week. Rockmelons are moving into some of the better eating varieties with plenty of value in the smaller sizes.

The orange candy melon is a new melon variety grown in north Queensland. It has a bright yellow shiny smooth skin, which is an indicator of fruit maturity. It is a relatively short season from October to December. This particular melon is best eaten when the flesh is firm and crisp, not soft. Orange candy melon is a very refreshing, sweet fruit and the perfect palate cleanser.

IN VEG:

Red washed potatoes from South Australia are a great pick up this week, as they are a flavoursome and versatile potato. Equally as good as a mash, for roasting, chipping or for the more adventurous type - to make the most magnificent creamy gnocchi you're ever likely to eat.

Heaps of excellent new crop Sydney basin Lebanese cucumbers in the markets and really good value Telegraph Cucumbers from south Australia are really in abundance this week. In fact, they are at prices we only see a handful of times a year. A low acidity sweet cucumber, telegraph cucumbers are great eating, great quality and a great price.
The standout in the snacking tomato range this week is the medley mix.

Truss tomatoes and asparagus are still in good supply and excellent quality.
