Dave's Market Update - 26.04.17
IN FRUIT
First and foremost for fruit this week will be new season Imperial mandarins from central Queensland. May is their month and this year has proved to be no exception and as we see every year, they just don’t cut the mustard in April. Most apples are still fantastic, however this week will see the end of this year’s Jonathons, they have been great! In their place Pink Ladies are now in full swing and there is an excellent offer in the imperfect category here. We have two very good plums this week, September Candies and Flavourfalls (strictly speaking a pluot not a plum) from Western Australia where the best of these grow. Lots more limes around this week and you will find real bargains in our imperfect stacks, far cheaper than lemons. All grapes are good though I prefer the Crimsons now to the whites which are now coming out of cool storage. Pomegranate supply is increasing and there will be lots of specials with these in the coming weeks. Now for the bad news, blueberries are in between the old season and the new season and will be dear and not great to eat for the next few weeks. Until only a few years ago we either didn’t have them at all in May or they were around fifteen to twenty dollars a punnet if available. I think there will be better options available if you search around, raspberries have been better value and better eating than blueberries for a couple of weeks now. Also greenskin Shepard avocados are coming to the end of their season and we must now transition to Hass, the ones that turn black on the skin when ripe. My tip would be to seek out the greenskins in our shops where I expect both to be still available this week, this will give a better eating outcome.
Lebanese cucumbers have continued their fall this week, and by tomorrow will be in our stores at a quarter the price of the price of a month ago. This has of course dragged baby cucumbers (Qukes) down as well. Not a lot of other good news this week except that black zucchini are down in price with the imperfect option being even cheaper and we have Kestrel potatoes at a great price in all our stores this week.
