Dave's Market Update - 01.05.17
IN FRUIT
A couple of things you may like to try for a change this week. Bonza apples are becoming less common in recent years and this week for one week we have them in store at an absolute bargain price. Persimmons have also arrived in quantity this week and there are great prices here at our stores. Mandarins continue to be fantastic but I don't think the price has changed at all, as do Crimson grapes. September Candy is still my pick of the plums followed by the Flavourfalls. Limes are still a better option than lemons and again chestnuts are well supplied. Berries, watermelon and avocados are all dear and average quality at best.
IN VEGETABLE
Good supplies of vegies are arriving at the markets this week. We are seeing welcome price drops in both broccoli and brocollini this week and all Harris Farm stores will have one or the other of these on special this week. This weather is perfect for producing excellent quality and high volumes of these two lines. Fennel is the other fantastic bargain this week. As I mentioned in Pick of the Week, this is now no longer an exotic or seasonal veg, it is now an all year round staple and the larger, stronger flavoured heads are in full swing this week, a little earlier than usual. Brown onions are great value still and look for a chopper bargain in this line on Thursday. Those fabulous Kestrel potatoes are still well supplied and all sweet potatoes, premiums and imperfects are good value this week. Overall vegetable quality is now excellent again and local market gardens are back in full production. Supplies should continue to be excellent until we get some really cold weather.
