Dave's Market Update - 19.06.18

IN FRUIT
The berry patch just keeps on giving. Another great week ahead of new season Queensland strawberries, along with blueberries and raspberries which are also supplied well this week. Passionfruit in nets will be more prominent in our stores this week as supply starts to increase. A perfect accompaniment to those berry desserts. Joining the citrus offer will be the start of the red-fleshed Cara Cara navel season. Mandarins and Navel oranges from down south are eating great and gold kiwi continues to be a real treat. With the USA Northern states starting to increase the supply of cherries over the coming weeks, we should hopefully see a drop in price at store level. USA stone fruit is continuing to put last year’s crop to shame. The fruit is looking and eating sensationally, the pick of these this week would have to be the yellow peach. In melons, we have seedless watermelon, Spanish melon and honeydew melon all eating well.
IN VEGETABLES
The versatile cauliflower is on top of the vegie list this week. Supply is coming from Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and central NSW, which means cheaper prices. But best of all the quality out of each area is fantastic. Broccoli and fennel continue to be in abundance, both cooked or raw there’s plenty of ways to enjoy. Sweet trellis-grown snow peas from Queensland are also well supplied. Such a great product with no wastage, it’s a must for those stir-fries or salads. Shallots are plentiful this week, which are supplied to us out of the Sydney basin. It is always great to able to support our local growers. This is another vegetable which can totally be consumed from top to bottom, from cooking to garnish, enjoy the lot. Truss tomatoes and gourmet tomatoes continue to be in good supply as are red capsicum from up north.
