Dave's Market Update - 07.03.17
IN FRUIT
Passionfruit, figs and blackberries are all very much on the menu this week. All eating well, all good quality and all right in season. If you want to try something different this week I would like to recommend those little currant grapes as a delightful change. They are never really cheap, but this week they are relatively very reasonably priced. All melons are still very good and my pick of the plum range this week are the Tegan Blues. Milder weather is improving the supply and quality of strawberries and Shepard avocados (or greenskins as we call them) are really good now.
As we draw to the end of the mango season we have a good selection of very well priced Brooks mangoes, the ones that stay green in appearance even when ripe. What we also have is some fantastic Kensington Pride mangoes that one of our growers is growing down in Mildura, which amazes me… it actually comes from Victoria. The fruit is magnificent to eat. It doesn’t keep all that well, or look all that good but it really eats. Our season just gets longer and longer.
IN VEGETABLE
Bargains galore in vegetables at the Farm this week. First cauliflowers are down around half last week’s price but also brown onions are as cheap as we ever see them. I would recommend stocking up on the brown onions at this price, it is a one off buy that we are passing on to our customers. The quality is superb, they will keep for weeks, they cannot get any cheaper.
We have another week of all Australian asparagus. It’s two weeks fresher than the imported product our opposition is selling and I invite you to taste the difference. Also from Australia this week we have Tasmanian new season eschallots replacing our imported product. I use them in my cooking every week. In greens, packets of beanettes, snow peas and imperfect zucchini are all great value as are our 2kg packets of kestrel potatoes and Jap pumpkin. Lots of good options again this week. For a bit of fun our fresh popping corn has just arrived in store this week. My grandkids love it and although regarded as a novelty by some it is actually a very good product.
