Small farms and local producers around Sydney are disappearing before our eyes. In fact less than 5% of all fresh food that comes into Sydney markets now comes from within 150kms. Hence it’s really important to know where our food comes from and how far it has travelled before landing in our shopping basket. Not least because the average basket of grocery goods in Australia has travelled over 73,000kms before reaching us ! So the choice you make about the food you eat has implications across NSW and around the world. It’s not just something you put in your mouth. It has a history and a spirit.
But it can often be difficult to work out what’s truly local and what’s not – not to mention who the grower is and where they’re from. So that’s why we’ve decided to make it much easier – by introducing a new LOVE LOCAL Fresh Section to highlight all the local grocery products that are grown and produced in rural areas within 150kms of your local Harris Farm Markets store. This new LOVE LOCAL initiative is our way of supporting the growing Australian local food movement.
You’ll find great local products such as fruit and vegetables, cheese, dairy, spreads, eggs, bakery and other local grocery items all grown or produced in the regional areas surrounding your local Harris Farm Markets store.
So look out for the LOVE LOCAL section and the LOVE LOCAL logo throughout our stores. Not only will you be playing your part in the Local Food Movement, you’ll be supporting your local area, its farmers and producers and enjoying the delicious natural taste of locally grown food.
Why buy local
It’s good for our local growers: Buying local, you’ll ensure a fair price for local producers. Plus with more of your money going to local growers it will help them to keep growing locally to you. Buying food that is grown within 150km of the store keeps food dollars in the community and local farmers in business. We aim to give you the choice of supporting local economy by purchasing truly local food and produce.
It’s good for our environment: Buying local helps reduce your carbon footprint, as it means the food doesn’t have to travel as far or use as much fuel, to get to you. The average food miles travelled by an Australian shopping basket is 70,000km, the equivalent of almost twice around the world. We aim to give you the chance to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of the food you eat by buying food that has travelled less than 150km.
It’s good for your community: Buying local helps keep your food dollars in your local community and contributes to the overall health of your community.
It’s good for your tastebuds: Buying local is a vote for freshness and flavour. Think about it, when it has travelled for only a few hours, it’s much fresher and it tastes better. Once local produce is picked it can be on your plate in a day or less, meaning local farmers allow the fruit to properly ripen and mature before picking, increasing the flavour and allowing nutrients to fully develop.
It’s good for agricultural diversity: Small local farmers grow the more flavour driven and often fragile varieties. They are best eaten locally and do not travel as well over long distances. Large-scale commercial farms are tuned to servicing the major supermarkets and their requirement for a limited and specific range of fruit and vegetables. Local growers are often made up of smaller farmers who grow a range of heirloom varieties, adding diversity to the produce grow.
But above all, if we don’t start choosing to buy local now, we might not have the choice in the future!

Meet our local growers
Every weekend between 11-3pm on either Saturday or Sunday at your local Harris Farm Markets store, you’ll have the chance to meet the local growers who supply our stores, at our LOVE LOCAL pop-up market stalls. It’s a great chance to meet the very people who harvest and deliver our best produce.
Local: Food grown within 150km
Tristan Harris, co-CEO Harris Farm Markets said, “We believe it’s about time local meant local again, not just Australian-grown like the other major supermarkets advertise. So we wanted to put a stake in the ground by defining local food as food that’s grown within 150km of each of our stores, to give our customers a choice to buy local and support their community.”
“We’re aiming to honour our responsibility as a grocer to educate our shoppers on the real stories behind where their food comes from, and how they can support their local economy by buying truly local.”
Giovanni Pilu, founder and head chef of Pilu at Freshwater thinks the LOVE LOCAL range is a fantastic initiative which will start a necessary conversation on supporting truly local farmers and producers. “I’m a big believer in buying truly local produce, because it’s fresher and tastier, so that’s what I stock in my restaurant every day. It’s time for shoppers to put more thought into the food they consume and the story behind that food.”
